Yusuf Arakkal
Born in 1945, Yusuf Arakkal was a trailblazing figure in the realm of Indian Asian Modern & Contemporary art. His journey began with a diploma in painting from Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat (KCP), Bangalore, which laid the foundation for his artistic exploration. He further honed his craft by specializing in graphic printmaking at the National Academy community studios in Garhi, Delhi. Arakkal’s canvas breathed with singular expressionism, a testament to his deep introspection about humanity and society. Against somber and oppressive backgrounds, faceless figures emerged, embodying the profound isolation and desolation that a material-driven society imposed upon the ordinary individual. His art spoke of the disenchantment of a society blinded by its pursuit of success, leaving ordinary souls stranded in the shadows. Yusuf Arakkal’s legacy rests not just in his artistic creations, but in his ability to mirror the human condition through evocative strokes of paint and contemplative forms.
