Ramkinkar Baij

Born in 1906 in Bengal, India, his artistic journey is a tapestry woven with bold expressions and a deep engagement with socio-political issues. Baij’s sculptures, paintings, and drawings bear the mark of his distinct style that defied traditional norms. As a founding member of the Santiniketan School, he was a student of Rabindranath Tagore, and his creations reflect a blend of modernist aesthetics with an indigenous touch. His sculptures, often carved from local materials, embody a raw energy and a sense of connectivity with nature. Baij’s themes range from rural life to existential musings, and his artistic language fuses realism with abstraction. His sculptures, especially his iconic “Santhal Family,” became symbols of a new visual language that transcended the boundaries of conventional art.
