Jeram Patel
Jeram Patel (June 20, 1930 – January 18, 2016) was a pioneering Indian abstract artist from Sojitra, Gujarat. He studied drawing and painting at Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai and later pursued typography and publicity design at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. Patel was renowned for his innovative technique of using a blowtorch on wood, a method he learned in Japan and introduced in India, creating distinctive burnt wood engravings. As a founding member of Group 1890, an artist collective established in 1962, he played a significant role in redefining Indian modern art. His works are characterized by abstract forms and have been showcased in various national and international exhibitions.
