Gulam Mohammed Sheikh

Born in the year 1937 in Surendranagar, Saurashtra, Gujarat, Gulammohammed Sheikh achieved a master’s degree in fine arts with a specialization in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Baroda, Vadodara. His artistic journey took a significant turn in 1966 when he was awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art in London. Later, he was honored with the title of Associate of the academy.Immersing himself in the rich tapestry of his native cultural heritage, Sheikh found inspiration in a diverse array of sources, including Persian, Mughal, and Pahari miniatures, as well as the poetry of Bakhti and Sufi traditions, all infused with a touch of magical realism. This amalgamation, along with his fascination for European Renaissance art, profoundly influenced his artistic ethos, transforming his paintings into narratives.
