Francis Newton Souza
Francis Newton Souza (1924–2002) was a pioneering Indian modernist painter and a founding member of the Bombay Progressive Artists' Group. Born in Saligão, Goa, he studied at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai. Souza's work is characterised by its bold expressionism, often exploring themes of religion, sexuality, and human form. His notable painting "Birth" (1955) exemplifies his distinctive style. Souza's art is held in prestigious collections, including the Tate Gallery in London and the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi.
