Abhanindranath Tagore

Abanindranath Tagore (1871-1951) was a significant Indian painter who established the Indian Society of Oriental Art, holding a prominent role as its leading artist. He also played a pivotal role in founding the Bengal School of Art, which greatly shaped the trajectory of modern Indian painting. Fearing the overwhelming Western influence on Indian art, Tagore advocated for a contemporary reimagining of traditional Rajput and Mughal artistic styles. Beyond his artistic pursuits, he authored numerous beloved children’s books that continue to enjoy popularity in Bengal.
